Sodom wasn't Gay, America's Okay

With the recent Supreme Court ruling making gay marriage the law of the land, the Right Wing freak-out is reaching fever-pitch. Of course this type of reaction isn’t new. We saw this same response—almost the same scriptures—in Brown v. Board of Education. When the Supremes declared segregation unconstitutional, the bigots came out en masse, threatening plagues, fire from heaven, wrath of God, a third Ghost Buster’s Movie. Political leaders urged Americans defy the court ruling and follow God rather than men. Pastors took to their pulpits to call for civil disobedience from Christians across the country.

Bigotry doesn’t die easily. In fact, it usually doesn’t die until the bigots themselves do. Who can forget George Wallace’s impassioned inaugural address? “…segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever…” Well, thank God most Americans opposed him.

And the world didn’t end with desegregation. Actually, we became a better country because of it.

So here we are well into the twenty-first century, and history is repeating itself—this time in the form of gay marriage. Although many of the segregationists are dead, their vitriol lives on the hearts of Conservatives across the country—now foaming at the mouth and fomenting more fear of God’s wrath. Because of gay marriage, they say, God is going to torture America.

One has to wonder if anybody knows why Christians have so much animosity toward gay people. Not even the Bible is this vitriolic. It seems that Christ’s “love” is all about how well you can hate. Christians love to hate—it’s their thing, and they hate with the holy love of God. To that end, the thought of God’s impending, eternal judgement on the homos brings a smile to a Fundie’s face and warms the cockles where their heart would be if they had one.

Sodom and Gomorrah has made a comeback in a big way. It’s bigger, badder, and newly endorsed by the Supreme Court. This is the favorite story of the Conservative, and they get orgasmic just talking about it.
